Last term our theme was 'Blooming Marvellous'. We learnt all about different plants and flowers. We found out what they needed to grow, what plants grew in different areas, what deciduous and evergreen meant, how to look after plants and much much more. What a busy term!

Year 1 have been working very hard to practise for their Phonics Screening Test. A big thank you to all the parents that have supported their child's learning by practising at home! The screening tests commence on Monday 12th June and last the week.

This term our theme is 'Majesty'. We will be learning all about The Queen and The Royal Family. We will learnt about the momentous occasions that have happened since Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne like her coronation and jubilee. We will be learning lots of new vocabulary like; Monarch, royalty, majesty, jubilee, coronation.

We will also be looking at the life of Edmund Hillary and all he has achieved. We will link to this what we have achieved in our own lives and also set targets for ourselves.

In English we are learning about fairy tales. We will be reading a variety of stories and will then sequence, retell, draw, write and talk about them. Our main writing focus in Year One is to always remember capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in every piece of work.

In maths we are learning about place value (what a number is worth) and will move on to addition and subtraction.

In theme lessons we will be using maps, atlases and globes to look at the United Kingdom and its countries. We will also learn about landmarks across the UK and recap on the 7 continents and 5 oceans. We will be exploring hot and cold areas of world in relation to the equator. We will compare these countries and look at the weather there, animals that live there, schools, people and clothing etc.
